What are the common causes of P0086 ?

Depending on year, make, and model, DTC P0086 may have number of causes. Here are some of the most common.
    • Circuit Problems – Wire harness and connector damage are the main causes of this VVT failure. Poor repair practices and rodent damage are common causes of this type of damage.
    • VVT Solenoid Valve Problems – The main failure here is an open circuit in the solenoid coil.
What are the symptoms of P0086 ?

Symptoms of a P0086 diagnostic trouble code may include:
    • Engine surge
    • Blown fuse (if applicable)
    • Lack of power
    • The light may stay on or light intermittently as the DPF regenerates. The engine will be sluggish on acceleration.
    How To Fix P0086 ?

The original multi-displacement system turned off opposite pairs of cylinders, allowing the engine to have three different configurations and displacements. P0086 code had an elaborate diagnostics procedure, including showing engine trouble codes on the air conditionning display. However, the system was troublesome, misunderstood by customers, and a rash of unpredictable failures led to the technology being quickly retired.
