    What Does P0089 Mean?

The P0089 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for a fault found with the fuel pressure regulator. The fuel pressure regulator regulates how much fuel is delivered to the fuel injectors.

The ECU controls the fuel pressure regulator and when a fault is detected the P0089 code is set. This code will remain until the problem is resolved.

What are the common causes of P0089 ?

Probable causes include a defective electronic fuel pressure regulator, a faulty fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, a low fuel condition, a faulty fuel pump driver/relay, or a defective fuel rail sensor. Open, shorted, damaged, or corroded electrical wiring and/or electrical connectors are also common causes of this code being stored. Wildlife damage (to system circuitry and components) is common on this area of the engine.

What are the symptoms of P0089 ?

Depending on vehicle type and failure mode, you may experience a number of undesirable conditions and drivability problems. You may not be able to start your vehicle at all, or it may start and run a few minutes and stall. If the engine runs, you may experience poor fuel economy, poor performance, lack of power, or rough idle. If actual fuel pressure is too high, you will likely experience engine knocking, a rich condition with possible fuel trim DTCs, even black smoke from the exhaust.

How do you troubleshoot P0089 ?

Look for damage to the tank indicating impact that may have damaged the fuel pump or sender. Look at the plug wires to make sure they are not burnt or laying on the exhaust. If the scan tool has that capability, and the scan tool can operate the IMRC valves, then the problem is either resolved and a simple code clearing is all that's left or a new PCM would be called for.
