    What Does P0100 Mean?

OBD-II Code P0100 is defined as a Mass Air Flow Circuit Malfunction.

The Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) measures the amount of air entering the engine. This is important information that the Engine Control Module (ECM) needs to calculate the proper amount of fuel quantity and ignition timing. The P0100 trouble code is set when the ECM detects a problem in the electrical circuit between the ECM and the MAF Sensor. Code P0100 is set when the data output from this critical sensor becomes erratic or disappears.

What are the common causes of P0100?

Common causes of this code are a disconnected plug at the MAF sensor, moisture or debris that has contaminated the vane of the MAF, a faulty MAF, a cracked or broken air inlet pipe, clogged air filter element, or faulty PCM. PCM failures are rare.

What are the symptoms of P0100?

The ECU will also illuminate the MIL (malfunction indicator lamp), also referred to as the CEL (check engine light), though you may not notice any drivability issues. Still, aside from the MIL, some common symptoms may include difficulty starting, poor idle quality, or lack of power. Additionally, since the MIL indicates that the ECU is now running the engine in open-loop “limp home mode,” you may also notice poor fuel economy.

    How do you troubleshoot P0100?

Look for damage to the tank indicating impact that may have damaged the fuel pump or sender. If the engine displays a miss and there wasn't a code, determine which cylinder is misfiring. If the exhaust manifold is visible, spay or pour a small amount of water on each cylinder exhaust port. Water will evaporate immediately on good cylinders and slowly on the missing cylinder. If this can't be accomplished pull the plugs and check the condition. It should be pretty close to battery voltage (12 volts). If not, then this is the circuit that has the problem.
