What Does P0115 Mean?

P0115 is the OBD-II generic code that indicates when the engine control module (ECM) reads the ECT sensor input go below or above the sensors expected range of 0.14 to 4.91 V (-40°C to 140°C -40°F to 284°F).

What are the common causes of P0115 ?

Usually the cause can be traced to a bad ECT sensor, however that doesn't preclude the following:

• Wiring or connector damaged at sensor
• Open or short in reference or signal circuit
• Open or short in signal circuit
• Bad PCM

What are the symptoms of P0115 ?

Symptoms of a P0115 diagnostic trouble code may include:

• Faulty O2 Sensor
• Lack of power
• If the DPF is not cleared the ECU will revert to the "Limp Home Mode" until the situation is corrected
• The light may stay on or light intermittently as the DPF regenerates. The engine will be sluggish on acceleration.

How do you troubleshoot P0115 ?

The original multi-displacement system turned off opposite pairs of cylinders, allowing the engine to have three different configurations and displacements. P0115 code had an elaborate diagnostics procedure, including showing engine trouble codes on the air conditionning display. However, the system was troublesome, misunderstood by customers, and a rash of unpredictable failures led to the technology being quickly retired.
