P0116 Code - Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Range/Performance Problem

What Does P0116 Mean?

The Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor measures the rise and fall of the Engine Coolant Temperature. This provides critical data needed for the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to control the Air Fuel Ratio, the Ignition Spark Timing, the cooling fans, and many components of the Emissions Control Systems. The Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor converts the coolant temperature into a voltage that is high when the engine is cold and low as the engine warms up.
Code P0116 is set when the Powertrain Control module sees irrational out of specification voltage signals from the coolant temperature circuit.

What are the common causes of P0116 ?

• Defective ECT sensor or high resistance in the sensor wiring
• Short to ground on ECT signal circuit
• Faulty or damaged connectors
• Wiring harness damaged Loose terminals at ECT or computer
• Overheated engine
• Defective computer (not likely)

What are the symptoms of P0116 ?

• The ECM turns on the Check Engine Light and goes into failsafe mode substituting input to 176 degrees Fahrenheit.
• Engine may have a hard start when engine is cold and start normal when warm
• Engine may run rough and hesitate until the engine warms up
• Engine should run close to normal once the engine warms up

Note: The symptoms are determined by the manufacturer failsafe ECM strategy for the vehicle during a failure, and may vary between manufacturers and vehicles.

How do you troubleshoot P0116 ?

Now, clear the codes and test-drive the vehicle to see if the code is reset. If the engine displays a miss and there wasn't a code, determine which cylinder is misfiring. If the exhaust manifold is visible, spay or pour a small amount of water on each cylinder exhaust port. Water will evaporate immediately on good cylinders and slowly on the missing cylinder. If this can't be accomplished pull the plugs and check the condition. Look for damage to the tank indicating impact that may have damaged the fuel pump or sender.
