P0117 Code - Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Low Input

What Does P0117 Mean?

In a nutshell, when a code P0117 ECT Sensor Circuit Low Voltage lights up the check engine light (CEL), the PCM is letting you know that it sees a continuous engine coolant temperature of 250°F (121°C) or hotter.

To give you more specifics... the PCM sees this extremely hot temperature as soon as you start your Ford (whose engine is cold) and thru' out the entire time you're driving. The PCM sees this hot temp not because the engine is really overheating, but due to a problem with the sensor or its circuits.

What are the common causes of P0117 ?

• Some aftermarket accessories and performance modifications
• A faulty oxygen sensor. This will set a code in itself, however, a faulty oxygen sensor does not automatically condemn the sensor. The code just means that the sensor signal was not within specifications. An air leak or any of the above will cause an erroneous signal. There is a multitude of O2 codes relating to O2 performance which gives a clue to the problematic area.
• Rough running engine due to misfiring plugs. Many engines have misfire codes to indicate the cylinder effected, such as P0307 for number 7.

What are the symptoms of P0117 ?

• ECM turns on the Check Engine Light and goes into failsafe mode substituting input to 176° F.
• The engine may have a hard start when engine is cold.
• The engine may run rough and hesitate until the engine warms up.
• The engine should run close to normal once the engine warms up.

How do you troubleshoot P0117 ?

The engine system, in conjuction with the engine control module (ECM)/powertrain control module (PCM), activates the P0117 code solenoid valve to control oil pressure to the engine mechanism that is installed in the valve system to switch valve timing between Low and High.If the engine solenoid valve has an open or short circuit, a DTC is stored.
