P0130 Code - O2 Sensor Circuit Malfunction Bank 1 Sensor 1

What Does P0130 Mean?

This code may be triggered when the powertrain computer or PCM determines that the oxygen sensor voltage or the the air fuel ratio sensor has remained in a lean signal/condition (below 400 millivolts) for too long. This criteria can vary from model to model.

The purpose of the oxygen sensor is to measure the oxygen content in the exhaust gases after they leave the combustion process of the engine. This data is vital in order for the engine to produce the best power while at the same time, producing the lowest possible amount of air pollution. If there is too little oxygen in the exhaust, it means the engine is running too rich and using excessive fuel.



This wastes fuel and pollutes the air with carbon monoxide. When this occurs, the Power Train Control Module or PCM will cut back on the amount of fuel it delivers to the engine. If there is too much oxygen in the exhaust, this means that the engine is running too lean and is polluting the air with poisonous nitrogen oxides and raw hydrocarbons. When this occurs, the PCM will increase the amount of fuel delivered to the engine.

What are the common causes of P0130 ?

• Defective ECU strategies or components will prevent proper regeneration
• The Mass Airflow sensor is a hot wire that senses the volume of air entering the intake manifold. The computer uses this information to control fuel mixture.
• Faulty IMRC actuator/sensor

What are the symptoms of P0130 ?

These could include a lean or rich condition in the engine, decreased fuel efficiency, black smoke from the tailpipe, and an illuminated service engine soon lamp.

How do you troubleshoot P0130 ?

Like the all engines, the car engine system employs specially developed hydraulic lifters (known as switching roller followers) for the P0130 code intake and exhaust valves. The lifters can be collapsed by disengaging an internal locking pin. The locking pin is disengaged using solenoids to alter oil pressure fed into the lifter.
