    What Does P0133 Mean?

Bank 1 Sensor 1 is a sensor that is used by the computer (ECM) to monitor the amount of oxygen exiting the engine. The ECM uses the signal from the O2 sensor to adjust the fuel and air ratio of the engine. The air fuel ratio is adjusted by the ECM to regulate the amount of fuel consumption and to limit the amount of air pollutants exiting the engine. The O2 Sensor will tell the ECM the air-fuel ratio by sending a voltage reading back to the ECM.

The variation of gas and air hitting the sensor should change the voltage output of the O2 Sensor. The O2 Sensor voltage output should change as quickly as you can press the gas pedal, because once you hit the pedal, the air-fuel ratio changes instantly.

P0133 indicates the ECM senses that the O2 Sensor is not changing its voltage output quickly enough to the changing air-fuel ratio. Hence why the P0133 trouble code definition is O2 sensor circuit “slow response” because the circuit is not reacting quickly enough.

What are the common causes of P0133 ?

Possible causes include a faulty oxygen sensor, faulty electrical connector at the oxygen sensor, faulty or shorted wiring in the oxygen sensor circuit, a blown fuse for the oxygen sensor (if applicable), low or excessive fuel pressure, a vacuum leak on the engine, excessive exhaust leaks, or a faulty PCM. PCM failure is rare.

What are the symptoms of P0133 ?
    • Check Engine Light will illuminate
    • Vehicle may idle or run rough
    • Decrease in fuel economy
    • Engine dies
    • Black smoke out of the exhaust and/or bad smelling exhaust
    • In some unusual cases, there are no adverse conditions noticed by the driver
How do you troubleshoot P0133 ?

The original multi-displacement system turned off opposite pairs of cylinders, allowing the engine to have three different configurations and displacements. P0133 code had an elaborate diagnostics procedure, including showing engine trouble codes on the air conditionning display. However, the system was troublesome, misunderstood by customers, and a rash of unpredictable failures led to the technology being quickly retired.
