What Does P0136 Mean?

A P0136 code may indicates that the the powertrain computer or PCM detects that the oxygen sensor voltage has remained below the expected range (in a lean condition, or below 400 millivolts) for too long. This criteria can vary from model to model.



The purpose of the oxygen sensor is to measure the oxygen content in the exhaust gases after they leave the combustion process of the engine. This data is vital in order for the engine to produce the best power while at the same time, producing the lowest possible amount of air pollution. If there is too little oxygen in the exhaust, it means the engine is running too rich and using excessive fuel. This wastes fuel and pollutes the air with carbon monoxide. When this occurs, the Power Train Control Module or PCM will cut back on the amount of fuel it delivers to the engine. If there is too much oxygen in the exhaust, this means that the engine is running too lean and is polluting the air with poisonous nitrogen oxides and raw hydrocarbons. When this occurs, the PCM will increase the amount of fuel delivered to the engine.

What are the common causes of P0136 ?

Common causes of code P0136 are much the same across all applications, and could include the following-

• Damaged, burnt, shorted, disconnected, or corroded wiring and/or connectors
• Open circuits
• Blown fuses (where applicable)
• Defective oxygen sensors
• Heavily fouled or contaminated oxygen sensors
• PCM failure is a rare event, and the fault must be sought elsewhere before any controller is replaced

How do you troubleshoot P0136 ?

With the valve disconnected, the red voltmeter lead should be attached to the IMRC valve power wire and the black voltmeter lead connected to ground. If all testing has passed so far yet you still have the same code, check your scan tool and see if it can open and close the IMRC valve. If the engine displays a miss and there wasn't a code, determine which cylinder is misfiring. If the exhaust manifold is visible, spay or pour a small amount of water on each cylinder exhaust port. Water will evaporate immediately on good cylinders and slowly on the missing cylinder. If this can't be accomplished pull the plugs and check the condition.
