    What Does P0163 Mean?

Bank 2 refers to the side of the engine opposite of cylinder number 1. Sensor 3 means that it is the third sensor in the exhaust, which is usually after the catalytic converter to monitor its efficiency.

This code means that the powertrain control module has detected a low voltage condition in the circuit for the oxygen sensor for bank 2 sensor 3. The Check Engine Light will illuminate to let the owner know that there is a problem with the emissions system.

What are the common causes of P0163 ?

Possible causes include a faulty oxygen sensor, faulty electrical connector at the oxygen sensor, faulty or shorted wiring in the oxygen sensor circuit, a blown fuse for the oxygen sensor (if applicable), low or excessive fuel pressure, a vacuum leak on the engine, excessive exhaust leaks, or a faulty PCM. PCM failure is rare.

What are the symptoms of P0163 ?

It does one good to note that the HO2S have nothing at all to do with fuel trim and are used only to verify TWC function, though FT problems, such as those caused by fuel pressure or misfiring cylinders, could skew HO2S readings, perhaps even set TWC or HO2S DTCs, but these would not result in circuit DTCs. Most of the time, as the TWC is not critical to engine function, but simply an emissions-control device, you will not notice anything other than the MIL.

How do you troubleshoot P0163 ?

Look for rubbing, scraping, bare wires, worn spots or melted plastic connectors. Pull the connectors apart and carefully look at the terminals (the metal parts) inside the connectors. With the valve disconnected, the red voltmeter lead should be attached to the IMRC valve power wire and the black voltmeter lead connected to ground. Replace the oxygen sensor that is downstream from the catalytic converter on the side of the engine that does not contain cylinder #1. Also, if a oxygen sensor code stating "heater circuit malfunction" the sensor has most probably failed.
