P0165 Code - O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response Bank 2 Sensor 3

What Does P0165 Mean?

The P0165 code means that the powertrain control module is not getting a normal response from the O2 sensor.

O2 sensors calculate the level of oxygen that passes by them. The signal that the O2 sensor sends to the powertrain control module is in the form of a reference voltage. If this voltage becomes lower than a specified range given by the manufacturer due to more resistance in the circuit, this code can appear.

This code can also be stored in the powertrain control module if the voltage reading coming from the O2 sensor remains the same for an extended period of time indicating a slow response.

What are the common causes of P0165 ?

Common causes of code P0165 are much the same across all applications, and could include the following-

• Damaged, burnt, shorted, disconnected, or corroded wiring and/or connectors
• Open circuits
• Blown fuses (where applicable)
• Defective oxygen sensors
• Heavily fouled or contaminated oxygen sensors
• PCM failure is a rare event, and the fault must be sought elsewhere before any controller is replaced

What are the symptoms of P0165 ?

Symptoms of a P0165 diagnostic trouble code may include:

• Hesitation upon acceleration
• Excessive exhaust leak
• Rich or lean exhaust
• If the DPF is not cleared the ECU will revert to the "Limp Home Mode" until the situation is corrected

How do you troubleshoot P0165 ?

The valves of each cylinder are kept closed using a pair of arms that replace the conventional engine's roller-type rocker arm. P0165 code one of these arms follows the cam profile while the second arm connects to the valves. During normal engine operation the two arms are joined by a locking pin.
