What Does P0166 Mean?

OBD-II Code Decreased engine performance is defined as a O2 Sensor Circuit no Activity Detected
The purpose of the oxygen sensor is to measure the oxygen content in the exhaust gases after they leave the combustion process of the engine. This information is critical to the PCM's ability to maintain efficient fuel economy. When the PCM detects a failure of the sensor or the information received from the sensor, it will set code P0166.

What are the common causes of P0166 ?

Possible causes include a faulty oxygen sensor, faulty electrical connector at the oxygen sensor, faulty or shorted wiring in the oxygen sensor circuit, a blown fuse for the oxygen sensor (if applicable), low or excessive fuel pressure, a vacuum leak on the engine, excessive exhaust leaks, or a faulty PCM. PCM failure is rare.

What are the symptoms of P0166 ?

These could include a lean or rich condition in the engine, decreased fuel efficiency, black smoke from the tailpipe, and an illuminated service engine soon lamp.

How do you troubleshoot P0166 ?

Now, clear the codes and test-drive the vehicle to see if the code is reset. Look for missing ground strap or a rusty ground where the fuel tank is grounded to the frame. Check for damage to the wiring harness connector. If the engine displays a miss and there wasn't a code, determine which cylinder is misfiring. If the exhaust manifold is visible, spay or pour a small amount of water on each cylinder exhaust port. Water will evaporate immediately on good cylinders and slowly on the missing cylinder. If this can't be accomplished pull the plugs and check the condition.
