What Does P0178 Mean?

OBD-II Code Decreased engine performance is defined as a Fuel Composition Sensor Circuit Low

vehicle's that are capable of running off of varying levels of ethanol (Flex Fuel, E85), will have a Fuel Composition Sensor in the fuel system so that the engine control module (PCM) can determine the fuel composition and adjust the fuel delivery accordingly. When the PCM detects an incorrect signal from the Fuel Composition Sensor, the PCM will set code P0178.

How do you troubleshoot P0178 ?

Pack the connector cavity with dielectric silicone compound (same stuff they use for light bulb sockets and spark plug wires) and reassemble. With the valve disconnected, the red voltmeter lead should be attached to the IMRC valve power wire and the black voltmeter lead connected to ground. Look at the plug wires to make sure they are not burnt or laying on the exhaust.
