    What Does P0183 Mean?

The PCM has detected an abnormal voltage reading from the fuel temperature sensor (flex fuel sensor) or circuit. This sensor is designed to detect fuel (ethanol) contamination and provide the PCM with an accurate fuel temperature.

What are the common causes of P0183 ?
    • The Engine Control Module (ECM) detects sensor circuit voltage above the specified range designed for the sensor when it is tested during startup, or during operation
    • Intermittent open circuit in wiring, connections, ECM or sensor faults
    • The fuel tank or fuel rail temperature sensor is going out of range, due to the connector being contaminated, causing an intermittent open in the circuit connection
    • The ECM is defective or has an intermittent open circuit
    • If the fuel goes below the temperature sensor’s range due to a fault, or the ambient temperature goes below -40 degrees F
How do you troubleshoot P0183 ?

With the valve disconnected, the red voltmeter lead should be attached to the IMRC valve power wire and the black voltmeter lead connected to ground. Pack the connector cavity with dielectric silicone compound (same stuff they use for light bulb sockets and spark plug wires) and reassemble.

    Process Tips

Diagnostic trouble code P0183 is not difficult to diagnose and repair. Thus, it always pays to have a qualified technician to look after your vehicle should this error code arise.

Diagnosing this code requires the engine to be in good running shape, without unmetered air entering the engine. If other codes that relates to misfiring condition, lean running or air entering the engine is present, then you must first fix those error codes before P0183.

Fortunately, P0183 is a fairly common OBD code, meaning that it applies to all makes and models of vehicles made after 1996.
