    What Does P0196 Mean?

This code indicates that the PCM has received a signal from the engine oil temperature sensor that the engine has (or is currently) overheating. It also indicates that the engine should probably be turned off to investigate the cause of the code. Operating an engine that is overheating may lead to catastrophic engine failure.

What are the common causes of P0196 ?

Depending on year, make, and model, DTC P0196 may have number of causes. Aside from a faulty EOT sensor, here are some of the most common causes:
    • Extreme Cold – Using your vehicle in extreme cold can be problematic for a number of reasons, because the engine needs to be at a certain temperature to run at its most-efficient. Typically, the engine needs to run around 195-205 °F for best performance and fuel economy, but extreme cold might make it hard for the engine to even get to that temperature. Consider covering the grille to keep excess air out of the engine compartment to conserve heat, only be careful to watch that temperatures do not swing to overheating when at a standstill, for example.
    • Racing and Towing – Putting your engine to its limits in the other direction can also impede engine oil cooling, which is essential for maintaining correct engine temperature. Racing and towing are two situations that can really push your engine’s cooling and lubrication system to the test. Consider adding an additional oil cooler to your setup to improve engine oil cooling.
How do you troubleshoot P0196 ?

If the engine displays a miss and there wasn't a code, determine which cylinder is misfiring. If the exhaust manifold is visible, spay or pour a small amount of water on each cylinder exhaust port. Water will evaporate immediately on good cylinders and slowly on the missing cylinder. If this can't be accomplished pull the plugs and check the condition. Pack the connector cavity with dielectric silicone compound (same stuff they use for light bulb sockets and spark plug wires) and reassemble. Look for damage to the tank indicating impact that may have damaged the fuel pump or sender.
