P0205 Code - Injector Circuit Malfunction Cylinder 5

What Does P0205 Mean?

• P0205 is a generic diagnostic trouble code which indicates that the injector circuit for cylinder 5 has out of range voltage or resistance. This is detected by the Engine Control Module (ECM) as it tries to control the circuit.
  
• P0205 can be seen with misfire, and lean/rich condition codes.
  
• P0205 is similar to P0200 - P0202, P0204, and P0206-P0212.

What are the common causes of P0205 ?

• A faulty oxygen sensor. This will set a code in itself, however, a faulty oxygen sensor does not automatically condemn the sensor. The code just means that the sensor signal was not within specifications. An air leak or any of the above will cause an erroneous signal. There is a multitude of O2 codes relating to O2 performance which gives a clue to the problematic area.
• Some aftermarket accessories and performance modifications
• An air leak forward of the DPF will change the sensor readings resulting in the code

How do you troubleshoot P0205 ?

The original multi-displacement system turned off opposite pairs of cylinders, allowing the engine to have three different configurations and displacements. P0205 code had an elaborate diagnostics procedure, including showing engine trouble codes on the air conditionning display. However, the system was troublesome, misunderstood by customers, and a rash of unpredictable failures led to the technology being quickly retired.
