What Does P0268 Mean?

OBD-II Code Decreased engine performance is defined as a Cylinder 3 Injector Circuit High

The engine control module (PCM) has special transistors called "drivers" to turn the Fuel Injectors on and off in the Fuel Injection System. If the PCM cannot control the fuel injector, it will set code P0268.

What are the common causes of P0268 ?

• The number three cylinder injector circuit has a short somewhere in the circuit from the ECM to the injector. This includes the wiring and connections.
• The number three injector is shorted electrically internally causing the circuit high current condition.
• The fuel injector pins are bent or broken in the injector or harness connection causing a short to power or ground.
• The injector wiring is shorted to power or ground (this may also short out components).
• The injector control module or ECM has a shorted internal circuit.

How do you troubleshoot P0268 ?

Look for missing ground strap or a rusty ground where the fuel tank is grounded to the frame. Check for damage to the wiring harness connector. Use the DVOM to test resistance and continuity on all system circuits if actuator and sensor resistance levels are in compliance with manufacturer's specifications. Replace the oxygen sensor that is downstream from the catalytic converter on the side of the engine that does not contain cylinder #1. Also, if a oxygen sensor code stating "heater circuit malfunction" the sensor has most probably failed.
