    What Does P0321 Mean?

OBD-II Code P0321 is defined as a Ignition/Distributor Engine Speed Input Circuit Range/Performance

The Crankshaft Position Sensor measures the exact rotational speed and position of the crankshaft. This provides a critical data signal used by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to control Ignition Spark Timing and Fuel Delivery. This sensor may be built into the distributor on older vehicles. When the PCM detects an irregular signal or no signal, it will set code P0321.

What are the common causes of P0321 ?

The most common cause of this code may include a defective crankshaft/camshaft position sensor, CPS wiring, or CPS electrical connector. A faulty distributor sensor, distributor, or respective wiring circuitry may also contribute to the conditions associated with this code being stored.

How do you troubleshoot P0321 ?

Look at the plug wires to make sure they are not burnt or laying on the exhaust. With the valve disconnected, the red voltmeter lead should be attached to the IMRC valve power wire and the black voltmeter lead connected to ground. Once located, visually inspect the connectors and wiring. Look for rubbing, scraping, bare wires, worn spots or melted plastic connectors.

    Process Tips

Diagnostic trouble code P0321 is not difficult to diagnose and repair. Thus, it always pays to have a qualified technician to look after your vehicle should this error code arise.

Diagnosing this code requires the engine to be in good running shape, without unmetered air entering the engine. If other codes that relates to misfiring condition, lean running or air entering the engine is present, then you must first fix those error codes before P0321.

Fortunately, P0321 is a fairly common OBD code, meaning that it applies to all makes and models of vehicles made after 1996.
