What Does P0344 Mean?

OBD-II Code P0344 is defined as a Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Intermittent

The Camshaft Position Sensor measures the exact rotational position of the camshaft in relation to the Crankshaft. This provides a critical data signal used by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to control Ignition Spark and Fuel Injector Timing. From the year 2000, the Camshaft Sensor is responsible for providing critical data to the Variable Valve Timing System which increases power and fuel economy while lowering emissions. When this signal is interrupted for any reason, code P0344 is set and the MIL or Check Engine Light is illuminated.

What are the common causes of P0344 ?

The most common cause of this code is related to oil (or other engine fluids) that have leaked onto sensors, wiring, or electrical connectors. This typically causes grounded, broken, or shorted wiring, along with loose or shorted electrical connectors. In some cases fluid contamination has also caused camshaft sensors to go bad. Some vehicles will store a camshaft position sensor circuit code if the crankshaft sensor goes bad. If one or the other is found to be faulty; it is recommended that camshaft and crankshaft sensors be replaced as a set. PCM failure is also possible but rarely occurs.

How do you troubleshoot P0344 ?

Like the all engines, the car engine system employs specially developed hydraulic lifters (known as switching roller followers) for the P0344 code intake and exhaust valves. The lifters can be collapsed by disengaging an internal locking pin. The locking pin is disengaged using solenoids to alter oil pressure fed into the lifter.
