What Does P0356 Mean?

OBD-II Code P0356 is defined as a Ignition Coil "F" Primary/Secondary Circuit

The ignition coil or coils are responsible for igniting the air/fuel mixture inside the combustion chambers. Without reliable performance from the ignition coil(s) the vehicle will stumble and misfire. The engine control module (PCM) has special transistors called "drivers" to turn the Ignition Coil(s) on an off. If the PCM cannot control the Ignition Coil, it will set code P0356.

What are the common causes of P0356 ?

A vehicle’s PCM could log a P0356 code for a handful of reasons:

• The (COP) could simply be faulty
• Coil #6 could have a loose connection
• Coil #6’s connector locks could be broken
• The COP driver circuit is open
• The COP driver circuit has a short to voltage or is ground

If none of these proves to be responsible, there’s always the unlikely chance that the problem is simply a PCM that isn’t working correctly.

How do you troubleshoot P0356 ?

Check to make sure they are not burnt or corroded. If in doubt, get some Electrical Contact cleaner at any parts store if cleaning of the terminals is needed. With the valve disconnected, the red voltmeter lead should be attached to the IMRC valve power wire and the black voltmeter lead connected to ground.
