    What Does P0378 Mean?

The PCM has detected an abnormality in the high resolution timing reference signal. The “B” pertains more to an area of the system circuitry than to a particular component.

What are the common causes of P0378 ?

There are many things that could cause an erratic pulse reading between the sensor disk and the PCM. Most often, these include a defective crankshaft, camshaft, or distributor position sensors.

    However, other causes may include:
    • Failure of the distributor
    • Open or shorted optical sensor
    • Faulty, corroded, damaged, open, or shorted wiring or connectors
    • Failed PCM, in rare cases

How do you troubleshoot P0378 ?

Look for missing ground strap or a rusty ground where the fuel tank is grounded to the frame. Check for damage to the wiring harness connector. You might continue by connecting the scanner to the vehicle diagnostic connector and retrieving all stored codes and freeze frame data.
