P0381 Code - Glow Plug/Heater Indicator Circuit Malfunction

What Does P0381 Mean?

P0381 is the OBD-II generic code for a glow plug/heater indicator circuit malfunction. The glow plug system, found in diesel vehicles, helps to provide heat in order to start the engine in cold temperatures. The ECM (Engine Control Module) monitors coolant temperature and glow plug voltage, facilitating the plugs heating before and while cranking the engine.

What are the common causes of P0381 ?

Common causes of this code may include (but are not limited to) faulty glow plugs, a faulty glow plug relay, a bad glow plug timer or module, shorted or open wiring in the glow plug heater circuit, loose or corroded electrical connectors in the glow plug circuit. Blown fuses are also a common problem but there is usually an underlying problem that caused a fuse to blow. Repair codes in the order that they appear on the code reader or scanner. Freeze frame data can also be helpful in diagnosing this condition.

How do you troubleshoot P0381 ?

With the valve disconnected, the red voltmeter lead should be attached to the IMRC valve power wire and the black voltmeter lead connected to ground. Check to make sure they are not burnt or corroded. If in doubt, get some Electrical Contact cleaner at any parts store if cleaning of the terminals is needed.
