P0405 Code - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor 'A' Circuit Low

What Does P0405 Mean?

The PCM has detected a problem with the rate of flow of the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. A trouble code has been stored and a malfunction indicator lamp has been illuminated. Some vehicle models require multiple drive cycles for a malfunction indicator lamp to be illuminated.

What are the common causes of P0405 ?

• The ECM monitors the EGR position sensor any time the key is on and if the sensor input signal voltage drops below a specified voltage returning to the ECM, then the code is set.
• The EGR sensor return is internally shorted to ground.
• The EGR sensor return wiring or connection is shorted to ground.
• The EGR sensor 5 volt reference voltage is open in the sensor or connection is not making contact.

How do you troubleshoot P0405 ?

The engine system, in conjuction with the engine control module (ECM)/powertrain control module (PCM), activates the P0405 code solenoid valve to control oil pressure to the engine mechanism that is installed in the valve system to switch valve timing between Low and High.If the engine solenoid valve has an open or short circuit, a DTC is stored.
