    What Does P0464 Mean?

The PCM has detected a voltage input signal from the fuel level sensor (or gauge) that does not coincide with the actual amount of fuel in the tank.

What are the common causes of P0464 ?

Typical causes of code P0464 are much the same across all applications, and these could include the following-
    • Burnt, damaged, shorted, or corroded wiring and/or connectors.
    • Open circuits.
    • Loss of ground.
    • Defective fuel level sender unit.
    • Damage to the fuel tank that inhibits the free movement of the moveable arm. Note that not all applications will set the code if damage to the fuel tank occurs.
    • Defective PCM/BCM. Note that this is a rare event, and the fault must be sought elsewhere before any controller is replaced.
NOTE: On some Ford products, fuel with high sulphur content can cause the build-up of a type of varnish on the variable resistor, which build-up prevents contact between the resistor and the moveable contact, thus setting code P0464. While some aftermarket fuel additives might assist in removing the varnish deposit, the better option is to replace the fuel level sensor unit.

How do you troubleshoot P0464 ?

With the valve disconnected, the red voltmeter lead should be attached to the IMRC valve power wire and the black voltmeter lead connected to ground. Pack the connector cavity with dielectric silicone compound (same stuff they use for light bulb sockets and spark plug wires) and reassemble. If the engine displays a miss and there wasn't a code, determine which cylinder is misfiring. If the exhaust manifold is visible, spay or pour a small amount of water on each cylinder exhaust port. Water will evaporate immediately on good cylinders and slowly on the missing cylinder. If this can't be accomplished pull the plugs and check the condition.
