What Does P0471 Mean?

The PCM has detected an abnormal voltage reading (high or low) from the exhaust system back pressure sensor circuit. Exhaust pressure is monitored primarily in turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines.

What are the common causes of P0471 ?

• A plugged converter will cause of host of driveability problems as well as set this code. A severely plugged converter will result in the inability to increase rpm when under load. How do you troubleshoot P0471 ?

The valves of each cylinder are kept closed using a pair of arms that replace the conventional engine's roller-type rocker arm. P0471 code one of these arms follows the cam profile while the second arm connects to the valves. During normal engine operation the two arms are joined by a locking pin.
