What Does P0474 Mean?

In order to control the exhaust back pressure regulator in a diesel or turbocharged engine, the exhaust back pressure sensor supplies a voltage reading to the ECM that indicates the current pressure level. If this data does not match the manufacturer’s specifications, the PCM will store the P0474 code.

• EPS Failure – Given its exposure to the heat of exhaust, it should come as no surprise that the EPS can fail. As long as circuit problems are ruled out, replacing the EPS usually results in a fix.

How do you troubleshoot P0474 ?

Oxygen sensors signal the engine management computer the amount of oxygen present in the exhaust, which is used in determining and controlling the fuel ratio. With the valve disconnected, the red voltmeter lead should be attached to the IMRC valve power wire and the black voltmeter lead connected to ground. Once located, visually inspect the connectors and wiring. Look for rubbing, scraping, bare wires, worn spots or melted plastic connectors.
