What Does P0479 Mean?

OBD-II Code Powertrain Control Module (PCM) failure is defined as a Exhaust Pressure Control Valve "A" Intermittent

The Exhaust Pressure Control Valve controls exhaust back pressure during engine warmup. If the engine control module (PCM) determines there is an incorrect signal from the Exhaust Pressure Control Valve, the PCM will set code P0479.

What are the common causes of P0479 ?

Typically, this code is caused by a back pressure tube or an exhaust back pressure sensor that is clogged, or by leaks in the exhaust system.
Other causes may include:

• Damaged or burnt out electrical wiring
• Damaged connectors
• Open circuits between the exhaust pressure sensor and the PCM
• Turbocharger overboost
• In rare cases, a faulty PCM

How do you troubleshoot P0479 ?

If you find a related TSB, the information will often help in diagnosing the code in question as TSBs are crested from many thousands of repairs. If the engine displays a miss and there wasn't a code, determine which cylinder is misfiring. If the exhaust manifold is visible, spay or pour a small amount of water on each cylinder exhaust port. Water will evaporate immediately on good cylinders and slowly on the missing cylinder. If this can't be accomplished pull the plugs and check the condition. Look for damage to the tank indicating impact that may have damaged the fuel pump or sender.
