P0486 Code - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor 'B' Circuit

What Does P0486 Mean?

The PCM has detected a problem with the rate of flow of the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. A trouble code has been stored and a malfunction indicator lamp has been illuminated. Some vehicle models require multiple drive cycles for a malfunction indicator lamp to be illuminated.

What are the common causes of P0486 ?

• Faulty EGR volume control solenoid valve
• Carbon built up on EGR valve
• EGR volume control solenoid valve harness is open or shorted EGR volume control solenoid valve circuit poor electrical connection
• Faulty EGR temperature sensor and circuit

How do you troubleshoot P0486 ?

With the valve disconnected, the red voltmeter lead should be attached to the IMRC valve power wire and the black voltmeter lead connected to ground. It should be pretty close to battery voltage (12 volts). If not, then this is the circuit that has the problem.
