    What Does P0487 Mean?

    OBD-II Code P0487 is defined as a Exhaust Gas Recirculation Throttle Control Circuit "A" /Open

    While this code description suggests there is a fault within the EGR system, this code actually refers to an electrical issue with the intake throttle actuator. The Intake Throttle Actuator is what opens and closes the throttle plate on an electronic throttle body. When the engine control module (PCM) detects an issue with the intake throttle actuator, the PCM will set code P0487.

    What are the common causes of P0487 ?
    • Fuel with a large percentage of sulfur will clog the DPF quickly
    • The Mass Airflow sensor will also cause this problem. Mass Airflow circuit malfunction.
    • Low fuel pressure caused by a clogged filter, failing fuel pump, failed fuel pressure regulator or clogged or leaking injectors.


    How do you troubleshoot P0487 ?

    A number of possible repairs can be used to fix the P0487 code, including the following:
    • Replacing damaged vacuum lines
    • Replacing a failed solenoid
    • Replacing the EGR valve
    • Cleaning out EGR passages
