What Does P0531 Mean?

The PCM (powertrain control module) receives information about refrigerant pressure from the refrigerant pressure sensor. If that pressure is high, the signal is high, and when the pressure is low, the signal voltage corresponds to that level. The PCM uses this information to dictate when the coolant fans come on. If the signal circuit is outside of the expected range for a specific amount of time – typically several seconds – the code will be set.

• Rarely - faulty Powertrain Control Module (PCM-programming required after replacement)

How do you troubleshoot P0531 ?

The engine system, in conjuction with the engine control module (ECM)/powertrain control module (PCM), activates the P0531 code solenoid valve to control oil pressure to the engine mechanism that is installed in the valve system to switch valve timing between Low and High.If the engine solenoid valve has an open or short circuit, a DTC is stored.
