What Does P0542 Mean?

OBD-II Code Hard or no start in cold weather is defined as a Intake Air Heater "A" Circuit High

The Intake Air Heater warms the air going into the engine on cold startups. If the engine control module (PCM) detects a failure in the Intake Air Heater or its wiring, it will set code P0542.

What are the common causes of P0542 ?

Technicians report the most common cause of this code being a faulty intake air heater relay. Other causes may include shorted or open wiring or connectors, a burnt out heater element, a bad intake air heater blower, a faulty or disconnected intake air temperature sensor, or a faulty PCM. PCM failure is rare.



How do you troubleshoot P0542 ?

Find out what kind of system you have and verify that voltage to the fuel level sensor is present at the fuel pump wiring harness. If the engine displays a miss and there wasn't a code, determine which cylinder is misfiring. If the exhaust manifold is visible, spay or pour a small amount of water on each cylinder exhaust port. Water will evaporate immediately on good cylinders and slowly on the missing cylinder. If this can't be accomplished pull the plugs and check the condition. If you find a related TSB, the information will often help in diagnosing the code in question as TSBs are crested from many thousands of repairs.
