What Does P0591 Mean?

OBD-II Code Cruise control will not operate is defined as a Cruise Control Multi-Function Input "B" Circuit Range/Performance
The Cruise Control System uses several input switches (i.e. Coast and Accelerate) If the engine computer (PCM) sees a signal from more than one switch at a time, code P0591 will set and the cruise control system will be disabled.

What are the common causes of P0591 ?

The majority of the time, the reason this code gets stored is because there’s a faulty cruise control switch that has failed to work.
Another common reason is circuitry located in the cruise control buttons that has shorted or is open because of spilled liquids. It takes surprisingly little to bring cruise control operations to a complete halt.

Other reasons for code P0591 include:

• Corroded or otherwise damaged connectors
• Open or shorted wiring
• Blown fuses

How do you troubleshoot P0591 ?

If all testing has passed so far yet you still have the same code, check your scan tool and see if it can open and close the IMRC valve. With the valve disconnected, the red voltmeter lead should be attached to the IMRC valve power wire and the black voltmeter lead connected to ground. If the engine displays a miss and there wasn't a code, determine which cylinder is misfiring. If the exhaust manifold is visible, spay or pour a small amount of water on each cylinder exhaust port. Water will evaporate immediately on good cylinders and slowly on the missing cylinder. If this can't be accomplished pull the plugs and check the condition.
