    What Does P0596 Mean?

When the cruise control feature is in use, vehicle speed is automatically controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), the cruise control module, and the servo control unit. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) receives a signal from the cruise control module as to the desired speed of the vehicle. The servo control unit receives information from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and cruise control module as to the required position of the throttle plate. The servo control unit will then open or close the throttle plate to maintain the desired speed of the vehicle. The P0596 diagnostic trouble code is stored when the cruise control module is not sending the proper speed signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) necessary to control vehicle speed and the cruise control servo control unit is giving an abnormal voltage or resistance reading.

What are the common causes of P0596 ?

The most likely cause of this code setting condition is a failed servo control unit. Many late model vehicles utilize a cruise control module with an integrated servo. Shorted or open circuitry in the cruise control buttons is also a possible cause of this malfunction. Liquid spilled onto cruise control components has proven problematic in the past. Other causes may include shorted or open wiring, damaged or corroded connectors, and blown fuses (although a blown fuse is usually a reaction to a more severe problem).

How do you troubleshoot P0596 ?

While fuel economy was increased, acceleration was seriously compromised, and the loss of engine vacuum led to a dangerous loss of braking assist when the P0596 code system was in four-cylinder mode. In addition to these issues, while the company proposed a hydraulically controlled system that could be switched from within the car, the version they implemented had to be manually changed in the engine compartment using hand tools.
