What Does P0644 Mean?

The control module has 2 internal 5-volt reference buses called 5-volt reference 1 and 5-volt reference 2 . Each reference bus provided 5-volt reference circuit for more than one sensor. Therefore, a fault condition on one 5-volt reference circuit will affect the other 5-volt reference circuits connected to the reference bus. The control module monitors the voltage on the 5-volt reference buses.

What are the common causes of P0644 ?

Causes for the P0644 trouble code include:

• Faulty electrical connection in the PCM
• Defective PCM driver
• Loose control module ground strap
• Broken ground wire
• Damaged electrical components in the controller area network (CAN) bus
• In rare cases, a defective PCM or CAN bus

How do you troubleshoot P0644 ?

Look for rubbing, scraping, bare wires, worn spots or melted plastic connectors. Pull the connectors apart and carefully look at the terminals (the metal parts) inside the connectors. Look for missing ground strap or a rusty ground where the fuel tank is grounded to the frame. Check for damage to the wiring harness connector. If the engine displays a miss and there wasn't a code, determine which cylinder is misfiring. If the exhaust manifold is visible, spay or pour a small amount of water on each cylinder exhaust port. Water will evaporate immediately on good cylinders and slowly on the missing cylinder. If this can't be accomplished pull the plugs and check the condition.
