What does P0696 Mean?

The PCM has detected an incorrect amount of voltage (high or low) in the electric cooling fan control circuit.

What are the common causes of P0696 ?

• A large air leak at or near the number one oxygen sensor would also cause a lean mixture.
• Faulty IMRC actuator relay (if equipped)
• An air leak forward of the DPF will change the sensor readings resulting in the code

How do you troubleshoot P0696 ?

The original multi-displacement system turned off opposite pairs of cylinders, allowing the engine to have three different configurations and displacements. P0696 code had an elaborate diagnostics procedure, including showing engine trouble codes on the air conditionning display. However, the system was troublesome, misunderstood by customers, and a rash of unpredictable failures led to the technology being quickly retired.
