    What does P0706 Mean?

OBD-II Code P0706 is defined as a Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

The purpose of the automatic transmission is to match the engine's optimum power and torque characteristics to the driver's desired rate of acceleration and speed by auto-selecting different gear ratios or 'speeds' to power the wheels. The Transmission Range Sensor (also referred to as the PRNDL input and/or neutral safety switch) tells the transmission control module (TCM) and the powertrain control module (PCM) that the transmission is in park, reverse, neutral, drive, low, 2nd, 3rd etc. It is attached directly to the manual valve of transmission, so when the shift lever is moved say from park to drive, the Transmission Range Sensor communicates this critical information to the above mentioned vehicle computer systems.

What are the common causes of P0706 ?

By far the most common cause of this code is from a misadjusted transmission range sensor. Other causes may include a defective range sensor, open, shorted, corroded, or otherwise damaged wiring and/or electrical connectors. If recent transmission repairs have been performed, suspect that the range sensor was not readjusted properly. Sensor retaining bolts should always be installed using thread locking compound to ensure proper torque longevity. Technicians also report the presence of excessive corrosion in the sensor connector as the cause of this code being stored.

How do you troubleshoot P0706 ?

Several repairs can fix a P0706 trouble code and include:
    • If necessary, flush and fill transmission fluid
    • Repair or replace any damaged or faulty wiring or connectors
    • Check battery voltage levels
    • Repair or replace any damaged or defective circuits or connectors
    • Repair or replace damaged or defective transmission range sensors
    • Repair or replace a damaged or defective ECM (rare)
    • Clear all codes, test-drive the vehicle, and rescan to see if any codes reappear
