What does P0708 Mean?

The P0708 trouble code means that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a malfunction with the transmission range sensor.

What are the common causes of P0708 ?

By far the most common cause of this code is from a misadjusted transmission range sensor. Other causes may include a defective range sensor, open, shorted, corroded, or otherwise damaged wiring and/or electrical connectors. If recent transmission repairs have been performed, suspect that the range sensor was not readjusted properly. Sensor retaining bolts should always be installed using thread locking compound to ensure proper torque longevity. Technicians also report the presence of excessive corrosion in the sensor connector as the cause of this code being stored.

How do you troubleshoot P0708 ?

Look for damage to the tank indicating impact that may have damaged the fuel pump or sender. Oxygen sensors signal the engine management computer the amount of oxygen present in the exhaust, which is used in determining and controlling the fuel ratio. Check to make sure they are not burnt or corroded. If in doubt, get some Electrical Contact cleaner at any parts store if cleaning of the terminals is needed.
