What does P0709 Mean?

OBD-II Code Transmission may not shift properly is defined as a Transmission Range Sensor "A" Circuit Intermittent
The Transmission Range Sensor (also referred to as the PRNDL input and/or neutral safety switch) tells the transmission control module (TCM) and the engine control module (PCM) that the transmission is in park, reverse, neutral, drive, low, 2nd, 3rd etc. It is attached directly to the manual valve of transmission, so when the shift lever is moved from park to drive, the Transmission Range Sensor communicates this critical information to the above mentioned vehicle control module systems. When the input from the transmission range sensor is erratic or irrational, the PCM will set code P0709.

What are the common causes of P0709 ?

• A large air leak at or near the number one oxygen sensor would also cause a lean mixture.
• Faulty IMRC actuator relay (if equipped)
• An air leak forward of the DPF will change the sensor readings resulting in the code

How do you troubleshoot P0709 ?

• Repairing this code may involve one or more of the following:
• Replacement of PCM wiring or connectors
• Replacement of transmission range sensor wiring or connectors
• Readjustment of transmission range sensor (the most common repair required)
