P0721 Code - Output Speed Sensor Range/Performance

What does P0721 Mean?

The speed sensor detects the revolution of the idler gear parking pawl lock gear and emits a pulse signal. The pulse signal is sent to the Transmission Control Module (TCM) which converts it into vehicle speed.

What are the common causes of P0721 ?

• An air leak forward of the DPF will change the sensor readings resulting in the code
• Rusty exhaust systems, cracked exhaust manifolds or damaged or missing gaskets or donuts will cause air leaks.
• Fuel with a large percentage of sulfur will clog the DPF quickly

How do you troubleshoot P0721 ?

Like the all engines, the car engine system employs specially developed hydraulic lifters (known as switching roller followers) for the P0722 code intake and exhaust valves. The lifters can be collapsed by disengaging an internal locking pin. The locking pin is disengaged using solenoids to alter oil pressure fed into the lifter.
