What does P0729 Mean?

OBD-II Code P0729 is defined as a Gear 6 Incorrect Ratio

The Input Speed Sensor tells the Transmission Control Module (TCM) how fast the engine is spinning so the correct gear can be engaged. The Output Speed Sensor tells the Transmission Control Module (TCM) how fast the output shaft of the transmission is spinning so it can verify the correct gear is engaged. The TCM compares both signals to verify the transmission is in the desired gear. If it is determined that the transmission is not in the desired gear, the engine control module (PCM) or TCM will set code P0729.

What are the common causes of P0729 ?

Common causes include faulty shift solenoids, hydraulic blockages inside the internal transmission fluid passages, mechanical internal transmission failures, low transmission fluid, dirty or contaminated transmission fluid, a faulty PCM or transmission control module.

How do you troubleshoot P0729 ?

With the valve disconnected, the red voltmeter lead should be attached to the IMRC valve power wire and the black voltmeter lead connected to ground. If the scan tool has that capability, and the scan tool can operate the IMRC valves, then the problem is either resolved and a simple code clearing is all that's left or a new PCM would be called for. If the engine displays a miss and there wasn't a code, determine which cylinder is misfiring. If the exhaust manifold is visible, spay or pour a small amount of water on each cylinder exhaust port. Water will evaporate immediately on good cylinders and slowly on the missing cylinder. If this can't be accomplished pull the plugs and check the condition.
