P0738 Code - TCM Engine Speed Output Circuit Low

What does P0738 Mean?

The PCM has received an engine speed signal from the engine (turbine) speed output sensor that is either irrational, erratic, or in some way incorrect. Without a usable input speed signal the transmission cannot provide a proper shift strategy.

What are the common causes of P0738 ?

• Fuel with a large percentage of sulfur will clog the DPF quickly
• The Mass Airflow sensor will also cause this problem. Mass Airflow circuit malfunction.
• A large vacuum leak would cause a massive amount of un-metered air to enter the intake manifold resulting in an overly lean mixture.

How do you troubleshoot P0738 ?

Like the all engines, the car engine system employs specially developed hydraulic lifters (known as switching roller followers) for the P0738 code intake and exhaust valves. The lifters can be collapsed by disengaging an internal locking pin. The locking pin is disengaged using solenoids to alter oil pressure fed into the lifter.
