P0741 Code - Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off

What does P0741 Mean?

The PCM has detected an abnormality in the torque converter clutch circuit. The computer controlled automatic transmission uses varying degrees of torque converter clutch application (also called torque converter lock up) to maximize engine power and optimize fuel efficiency.

What are the common causes of P0741 ?

• Faulty TCC
• Faulty torque converter lockup solenoid
• Internal short in the TCC solenoid
• Wiring to the TCC solenoid that is damaged
• Faulty valve body
• Faulty Transmission Control Module (TCM)
• Faulty Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor
• Damage of the wiring harness to the transmission
• Restricted hydraulic passages from dirty transmission fluid

How do you troubleshoot P0741 ?

Look at the plug wires to make sure they are not burnt or laying on the exhaust. With the valve disconnected, the red voltmeter lead should be attached to the IMRC valve power wire and the black voltmeter lead connected to ground. If the scan tool has that capability, and the scan tool can operate the IMRC valves, then the problem is either resolved and a simple code clearing is all that's left or a new PCM would be called for.
