    What does P0794 Mean?

OBD-II Code Transmission may not shift properly is defined as a Intermediate Shaft Speed Sensor "A" Circuit Intermittent

The Intermediate Shaft Speed Sensor tells the Transmission Control Module (TCM) how fast the intermediate shaft of the transmission is spinning so the correct gear can be engaged. When the TCM receives an inaccurate signal from this sensor, it can't properly shift the vehicle from gear to gear as the vehicle needs to change speed and rates of acceleration. The engine control module (PCM) or TCM will set code P0794.

What are the common causes of P0794 ?
    • A large vacuum leak would cause a massive amount of un-metered air to enter the intake manifold resulting in an overly lean mixture.
    • Faulty IMRC actuator/sensor
    • A plugged converter will cause of host of driveability problems as well as set this code. A severely plugged converter will result in the inability to increase rpm when under load. Look for a code such as P0421 -- catalytic converter efficiency below threshold if the converter indicating a faulty converter.

How do you troubleshoot P0794 ?

While fuel economy was increased, acceleration was seriously compromised, and the loss of engine vacuum led to a dangerous loss of braking assist when the P0794 code system was in four-cylinder mode. In addition to these issues, while the company proposed a hydraulically controlled system that could be switched from within the car, the version they implemented had to be manually changed in the engine compartment using hand tools.
