    What does P0860 Mean?

OBD-II Code P0860 is defined as a Gear Shift Control Module "A" Communication Circuit

The Transmission Control Module (TCM) and the engine computer (PCM) constantly talk to each other to ensure that the driver's request for performance is met. If the TCM and PCM fail to communicate, code P0860 is stored.

What are the common causes of P0860 ?

Several problems may cause a P0860 code including:
    • Damaged, open, or shorted wiring or connectors and related components
    • Damaged or defective manual lever position sensor
    • Excessive moisture levels in the gear shift module sensor connector

How do you troubleshoot P0860 ?

The original multi-displacement system turned off opposite pairs of cylinders, allowing the engine to have three different configurations and displacements. P0860 code had an elaborate diagnostics procedure, including showing engine trouble codes on the air conditionning display. However, the system was troublesome, misunderstood by customers, and a rash of unpredictable failures led to the technology being quickly retired.
