What does P0896 Mean?

OBD-II Code Transmission may not shift properly is defined as a Shift Time Too Long

The automatic transmission matches the engine optimum power and torque characteristics to the driver's desired rate of acceleration and speed by auto-selecting different gear ratios or 'speeds' to power the wheels. If the Transmission does not shift properly, it will send a message to the engine computer (PCM) to set code P0896.

The engine system, in conjuction with the engine control module (ECM)/powertrain control module (PCM), activates the P0896 code solenoid valve to control oil pressure to the engine mechanism that is installed in the valve system to switch valve timing between Low and High.If the engine solenoid valve has an open or short circuit, a DTC is stored.
